Founded in Birmingham in 1937 by Geoffrey Malins, Mamod is world famous for the production

Dating the MM2 is difficult, as it was introduced in 1939 and, following a brief hiatus in the 1940s as a result of some foreign chappie called Hitler causing a spot of bother, has remained in production right up to 1979 (rather delightfully, Mamod are still in existence and still making steam engines in Birmingham - and most of their suppliers are in the local area, too). However, there have been some small changes - so we can tell that this one is definitely post-1953 because the flywheel is mazak alloy rather than brass, but it doesn't have the overflow plug added in 1975 - as it doesn't have its burner, which would allow us to narrow the date down a little more closely depending on whether it was a spirit fuel or hexamine block type, that 22-year period is as close as we're going to get.

The engine frame is the pressed steel type, not as attractive as the very early brass type but far cheaper to produce, and the boiler and funnel are both brass, as is the piston and pressure valve. The base is fully compatible with Meccano construction sets and was in fact quite possibly made by them, as the two companies had a long association with Mamod even building a steam engine to provide power to Meccano sets, which was marketed under the Meccano brand; just one of the many uses to which Mamod engines have been put because, like all steam engines, they're able to produce a remarkable amount of torque - I had a friend when I was at school who converted one to power a lathe, and we once hooked my Mamod traction engine to a 4-wheel-drive radio control car - the steam engine easily pulled it backwards, even with the motor running at full power.

Whilst we haven't been able to test this one with fuel, the mechanism rotates smoothly and there is nothing to suggest it's not in working order - though it would undoubtedly benefit from a good clean and polish and some oil, and it'd probably be a good idea to overhaul the regulator/pressure valve before you try to steam up (it's stuck in at the moment, despite someone at some point trying to get it out with pliers; penetrating oil ought to free it up.

However, please do examine the photos carefully before deciding to bid, as it's definitely showing some signs of its 48+ years.

Returns

Change of Mind
