  • Vintage Tech! Cambridge Computer Z88 Portable, C. 1987, Peripherals & Extras 1
    Open Full-Size Image

Initially codenamed Project Pandora, the Z88 was a portable computer designed by Cambridge Computer, a company set up by Sir Clive Sinclair to develop and market this model.

One of the very earliest examples of what we now call a laptop, it's 29.3cm (11.5 inches) wide by 21cm (8.25 inches) and 2.2cm (1.9 inches) thick and weighs just 900g (2lb) - all of which seemed incredible at the time. The microprocessor is low-power variant of the legendary Zilog Z80 as also used in Sinclair's ZX80, ZX81 and ZX Spectrum home computers, which enabled it to run on four AA batteries for 20 hours when a mains connection wasn't available, and operated with the Z80 version of BBC BASIC. The display is a 640x64 pixel 2-level greyscale LCD.

By the time the project came to fruition, Cambridge Computer had been bought by Amstrad and the Z88 was designed to work with Amstrad machines, with numerous peripherals allowing them to be connected. Remarkably, despite home and business computers having advanced far beyond the Z88's capabilities, software and accessories were still being developed a decade later.

This one has the model code GUA3SP Z88, which suggests it may have been destined for the US market. It's quite well-used and the metal plate under the display is only partly attached to the plastic fascia, but overall condition is good and it's in full working order. It's been upgraded by installing two 128k RAM packs (ooooh! 256k!) and a 32k EPROM pack, and is supplied with the accessories and peripherals seen in the photos and listed below.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
