Description

In the entire history of optical equipment, there is no name that has become as synonymous with excellence as Carl Zeiss. Founded in the German city of Jena in 1846, the company has long been the world leader in the production of lenses and has registered a vast list of patents in photography, medical imaging, astronomical optics (it's responsible for the lenses on the James Webb Space Telescope, as well as at many terrestrial observatories around the world) and many other fields.

Following the division of Germany after the Second World War, Jena fell within the Soviet-controlled East Germany. Zeiss had expanded to many locations by this time with facilities throughout the country; those fortunate enough to be located in West Germany continued much as they had before the war, but the facilities in East Germany were less fortunate - in common with many other companies, they could only stand by as the Red Army ransacked their factories, loaded the tooling and anything else of value onto trucks and carted it all back home to the USSR. However, the Russians couldn't steal the East German's expertise; the East German side of the company was renamed Zeiss Jena and throughout the Cold War continued to produce high quality items despite their factories soon looking primitive compared to those in West Germany, and are especially sought after by collectors.

Among their products were the Deltrintem binocular range, which had been introduced as far back as 1920 (and would remain in production until 1990). This pair have the serial number 5198935, which reveals them to have been made at some point between 1958 and 1961 - a period when tension was building between the Western powers and the Eastern Bloc and it looked as though the situation might boil over at any moment into global nuclear war. The Soviets, with their economy already in the doldrums following Stalin's time in power, were sucking vast sums from all the Eastern European nations in order to fund military development and, no longer able to afford raw materials, most Eastern companies had to cut corners to save costs and quality control suffered badly - but not Zeiss Jena which, sticking to the same standards they always had, ensured their optical gear was still excellent, by far the best available in the Eastern Bloc. Their products from that era are especially sought-after by collectors; this pair also has the Q1 "Qualität 1" symbol granted by the ASMW Office of Standardisation, Metrology and Product Testing, indicating that they are a first-rate product which has passed extensive quality testing.

They're in surprisingly good structural condition despite having had a knock hard enough to crack the plastic surround of the right eyepiece: the collimation is still spot-on, which pays testament to just how well-made they are. They've been well used and are missing some paint as a result, but the logos and other text is clear and distinct. Optically, they're perfectly usable despite the right objective lens having a tiny chip right in the centre; there is a very small amount of dust within the barrels, but this does not affect use. The original leather strap is still fitted and, though worn, is in one piece and free of rot; the original leather case is also included and is in excellent condition - the catch works, the lining is exceptionally good, the strap is in one piece and shows little wear and, considering the case is 60+ years old, there are remarkably few scuffs to the leather.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
