Description

Wharfedale, named after the valley in which the company is located, has been producing speakers and audio gear at Ilkley in Yorkshire ever since it was set up by Gilbert Arthur Briggs in 1938. Briggs was, perhaps, one of the very first audiophiles, and strove to build the sort of speakers that could reproduce music as he wanted to hear it; thanks to a series of innovations - the first speakers fitted with ceramic magnets, for example - and an emphasis on development, the company soon became famous with speakers being shipped out to audiophiles and music venues around the world.

When the Modus 4 speakers hit the market back in 2000 they cost more than £600, placing them within "high end" price territory. However, those who bought them let it be known that they were actually something of a bargain: you got a lot of bang for your 600 bucks, and they were very good quality bangs too - anything remotely comparable from Wharfedale's rivals was going to cost a lot more. They were well built and able to withstand a few knocks, which made them a popular choice for pubs - that build quality is definitely apparent in this pair because, whilst the scuffs and scratches show they've seen some life, the sound quality remains excellent even at high volume. And if high volume is what you want, you've got 100W power here. That's more than enough for home use and then some...your neighbours are going to love them.

Tested and found to be in full working order with excellent sound quality, these speakers do have a few scuffs, mostly limited to the rosewood-effect cabinets and the plastic shell of those frog-eye tweeters - it's nothing too unsightly, but do please be aware of this if aesthetics are an important consideration. The fabric grilles are a little worn too with a small tear to the upper left corner of one (fortunately it's really very small and not noticeable unless you look close) and some ingrained dust, but these can of course be replaced if so desired. Underneath, the cones and woofers are in excellent shape. There are no feet and the bottoms are scratched up as a result, but again this can only be seen if you go looking for it. There are more scratches round the back, but the important bits are shipshape: the binding post terminals, compatible with banana plugs and bare wire connections, are clean and unscrew smoothly.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
